James Hector's giant geological map of Otago

The Hocken Library has recently unveiled a newly restored copy of Hector’s geological map of Otago, created in 1865. Over 1.5 metres wide, it is an impressive display map that former Otago graduates may recall in the Geology Museum. You can examine it online on a newly-created website and zoom in on the detail at:

Press Release: New Zealand Topographic Maps made Free and Easy Online (now with working link)

If you’re a keen tramper, angler, hunter, or other outdoor pursuit enthusiast you’re likely to already be familiar with the official LINZ ‘NZTopo’ Topographic Map Series, traditionally purchased as printed paper maps. These topo maps have now been made even easier to use and access through the free online service www.topomap.co.nz.
